The Welsh Federation Show 20th October 2007

The Royal Welsh Showground at Builth Wells is found in the beautiful countryside of Mid-Wales and it hosts several livestock and agricultural shows throughout the year. The largest, and most well known, of these is in July, the Royal Welsh Show, a four day event with a large array of livestock and many interesting stalls. The Smallholders’ Show in May is great for anybody interested in keeping animals from cattle to cavies, with various stalls selling equipment, tools, clothing and feed. There is also plenty of information available for the enthusiastic smallholders. The Winter Fair at the end of November is another very popular event and also hosts a very good poultry show, which has grown tremendously in size over the past few years. There are plenty of other livestock to see along with lots of festive goodies to buy and taste. It is the ideal place to do some Christmas shopping.

However, for poultry and waterfowl keepers, the most prestigious event held at the Royal Welsh Showground, and by far the biggest Poultry Show in Wales, is the Welsh Federation Championship Poultry Show, run by the Poultry Club of Wales and held in October. The show is held under the Poultry Club of Great Britain rules, and is supported by various chicken breed clubs who have regional shows here. It is also a British Waterfowl Association championship show and Call Duck Association regional show.

With a total show entry of 1357 this year, we knew we were in for a busy event. It was gratifying that the show had attracted exhibitors from all over Wales and England (including the Isle of Man and the Isle of Wight). With support like this, it certainly makes it all worth while.

I think it is an excellent day out. Exhibitors can pen their birds and then go off to see all the other attractions on the show ground. These include the biggest Cob sale in the country, while the birds are being judged. Then return to see what birds have won, how they have done and talk it over with other fanciers.

Waterfowl (Entries 425)   Judges: Tony Axon, John Richards and Julian Burrell.
There was the best entry of Waterfowl we have had to date, with a good entry of Geese, and very nearly all of the Duck classes being very well supported. The Black East Indians were very well represented, both in number and quality. The judge, Tony Axon, said that there was not a bad bird among them.
It is always gratifying when you can show in a good class of birds. You may well have some nice birds but if there are not many entries in a class it is hard to assess just how good they are. It was also very nice that so many exhibitors came up to various committee members thanking them for a great day and a good show.
The Champion waterfowl was a very good Brecon Buff Goose exhibited by Chris and Mike Ashton, a worthy winner. The Reserve Champion Waterfowl was a Black East Indian Duck exhibited by Laura Ewan who has been doing very well with these bantams. It is nice to see so many good birds being bred by her.
