Poultry Club of Wales
Report by Huw Thomas

The last year has seen the Poultry Club of Wales achieve several notable goals, two of which are an outstanding annual Welsh Federation Championship Show and the other, a very healthy balance sheet at the end of the financial year. Our show attracted over 1300 entries with exhibitors travelling vast distances to be with us. Of course, to be able to retain our entry fees at a reasonable level because we own our own cages in partnership with the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, is something of which we feel particularly proud.
We also benefit from the Society's poultry facility, erected some two to three years ago. Ironically, some of us feel already, that an extension to the building is inevitable as we are hard pressed to juggle the existing entries.
In addition, the management group of the Welsh United Game Club have decided to move their annual show [held for many years in Seven Sisters, near Neath] into our Welsh Federation event. This of course provides us with the pleasant problem of space, but at the same time a huge boost in the number high quality game birds. We have also been granted Regional Shows for the R.I.R and German Langshans. These are two of many regional shows that the Club are proud to have, they include O.E.G, Australorp, Silkie Club, White Wyandotte, Belgian Club, Pekin Club Brahma Club, Buff Orpington, Rosecomb, Araucana , Sussex , Minorca , New Hampshire Red, Croad Langshan. Also we also have the Championship Shows for the B.W.A and Call Duck Association Regional Show.
Our major advantage we have with our show is that it is always held on the middle day of the largest sale of Welsh Cobs in the world and this not only provides added interest and entertainment for our exhibitors and members, it also boosts the numbers of visitors to our show, something which pleases us greatly.
One item of note is the decision by our Committee to present an extra award for the Show Champion. We decided that a specially commissioned 'Dragon in Slate', a piece of polished Welsh Slate from the quarries of North Wales and inscribed in both Welsh and English, should be awarded annually. The first winners were Laurence and Steele from the Isle of Man with their immaculate German Langshans and we all hope that the 2008 Award will sit proudly on their mantle piece for years to come.
The committee meetings of the Poultry Club of Wales have always been open to all members as we believe in transparency in all our decisions and, of course to encourage discussion on a whole range of issues.
Our last Annual General Meeting saw our first President, Mr Steven Kinsey Pugh stand down after years of outstanding service to our club. Steven's influence within the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society and in Welsh country matters in general have been of enormous benefit to us, as has been his guidance, down to earth approach and common sense.
To mark his retirement it was the unanimous decision of the Committee to make Steven a Life Vice President and we are very grateful for his contribution since the formation of the Poultry Club of Wales in l994.
I personally was elected to follow Steven and I can assure everyone that I felt it a great honour and I will certainly do my utmost to help both the Poultry Club of Wales and the wonderful hobby of poultry breeding and showing throughout Wales and beyond.
Finally, I must thank everyone involved in our club activities and in particular our Chairman Paul Tucker and our Secretaries Jeanne and Edward Page. Their work is largely unseen, but always successful and all three are excellent ambassadors for our Club.
Our treasurer, Rev Sion Alun has certainly steered us to a positive financial position and we all hope that Sion's health will soon improve to allow him to return to his full energetic self.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Welsh Federation Championship Show on Saturday 17th October, 2009 where you will receive a warm welcome.
